Honestly, it might be the most adorable thing ever to see her prancing around in her plush sweatshirt, and it certainly turns heads during our walks! Raincoat for Yorkies

Yorkies generally don’t like getting wet (my pup will tiptoe around puddles and give me a pathetic look if it’s raining). Having a lightweight dog raincoat or poncho can make rainy potty breaks less miserable for both of you. It keeps their body dry, so you only have to towel off their paws and face afterwards. 

Some raincoats even come with hoods to protect their head. It may take a little training for a puppy to get used to wearing a coat or raincoat, but start slowly and use treats. Now when my Yorkie sees her little rain jacket come out, she knows it’s time to brave the drizzle and she patiently lets me Velcro it on.

Boots or Paw Protection

This is one supply I never thought I’d need until I realized how sensitive Yorkie paws can be. Hot pavement in summer, icy sidewalks in winter, or even just rough terrain can be hard on those tiny feet. Dog boots are a great solution – and they’re also hilarious (the first time a puppy wears boots, they often do a funny high-step walk). I decided to get the Waterproof Yorkie Boots for winter, and they have been incredibly useful. These are little non-slip boots that protect my pup’s paws from snow, ice, and road salt. The boots are waterproof and have a secure but comfortable strap, so they actually stay on her feet. It took a few tries for her to get used to them, but now she prances happily even on cold, wet ground because her paws are dry and warm.

In summer, I sometimes use them if we’re walking on hot asphalt to prevent burns. If boots seem like too much for you or your pup, an alternative is paw wax or pad protectors – you apply a wax balm to their paw pads to shield them from hot or cold surfaces. However, I found the boots more effective for truly harsh conditions. Plus, they keep her paws clean, which means fewer muddy footprints inside!

Teacup Yorkie Dog Accessories 

If your Yorkie is on the especially small side (often referred to as a “teacup Yorkie”), finding clothes and gear that fit can be challenging. You may need teacup dog accessories – basically the XXS versions of everything. 

The good news is that many products on Yorkies-gram and other specialty pet stores are made with these tiny pups in mind. For example, the sweater I mentioned comes in very small sizes that accommodate even a 2 or 3 pound Yorkie. 

Always measure your puppy (chest girth, neck, and length) and check size charts before buying clothing or boots. A proper fit is important for safety and comfort. If something is a tad big, your Yorkie might wriggle out of it.  

Too tight and they’ll be uncomfortable or resistant. When you find something that fits well, it’s like hitting the jackpot. I ended up getting my pup a teacup Yorkie sweater (size XS) that fits her perfectly, and it has made a world of difference on cold days.

Yorkie Accessories & Styling

Part of the fun of having a Yorkie is that they can rock some pretty fabulous accessories. A simple topknot using a little hair band or bow will keep long hair out of your puppy’s eyes (and give that classic Yorkie look). Be very gentle when brushing and tying up their hair – puppy hair is extra fine. There are also tiny bandanas, bow ties, and even tutus out there for special occasions. 

While these are totally optional, I’ll admit I have a small collection of yorkie accessories like bow clips and bandanas for my girl. We save them for photo sessions or when we have company and I want her to look extra cute. She doesn’t mind at all – in fact, I think she struts a little more when she’s all dressed up!

Clothing for yorkies and weather gear might not be absolute essentials in every situation, but for many Yorkie owners, they are a lifesaver. Yorkshire Terriers make fantastic little travel companions – they’re portable and usually curious about the world. To ensure your Yorkie is safe and comfortable on the go, you’ll need a couple of yorkie supplies for travel: a secure car setup and possibly a carrier for other outings.

Dog Carrier Bag 

A carrier is basically a must for toy breeds. It allows you to transport your Yorkie safely in various situations – vet visits, errands, flights, or even just when you want to keep them close in a busy environment. Look for a carrier that is well-ventilated, sturdy, and appropriately sized (your pup should be able to stand up and turn around in it). I have an airline-approved soft carrier that I used extensively when my puppy was very small. 

She felt snug and secure in it, and I could carry her hands-free with the shoulder strap. As she grew a bit, I upgraded to the Expandable Yorkie Carrier from Yorkies Gram. This carrier is fantastic – it has an expandable section that zips out to give your Yorkie more room to stretch when you set it down, almost like a little pop-out playpen attached to the carrier.

And since Yorkies are so lightweight, carrying them around in a comfy bag is usually no trouble at all. My pup often curls up and naps in her carrier when we’re driving or waiting at the vet, because it’s like her own little den.

Car Seat or Seat Belt Harness

Safety in the car is crucial. You should never have a puppy loose on your lap or roaming the car while you drive – it’s dangerous for both of you. A sudden stop or turn could send a small dog flying off the seat. 

The solution is a dog car seat or booster seat that secures to your vehicle. I use the Padded Yorkie Car Seat for my Yorkie and it has been a game-changer. This plush booster seat clips onto the car and elevates her so she can see out the window (Yorkies love to sight-see!), all while being strapped in safely. 

It comes with a built-in tether that I attach to my dog’s harness, so she can’t jump out. The padded sides are like a little bed – she often just settles in and snoozes during longer drives. If a full car seat isn’t for you, at the very least get a dog seat belt harness attachment. 

That usually involves a special leash that clicks into the seatbelt buckle and attaches to the dog’s harness, keeping them restrained. However, I found the booster seat to be more comfortable and secure for such a small pup, because it keeps her in one spot and she doesn’t get tangled.

A few other items make traveling with a Yorkie puppy easier. Keep a small bag packed with travel accessories for Yorkies like collapsible water bowl, a bottle of water, some kibble or treats, poop bags, and a spare leash. 

I also include a couple of her favorite toys in the car seat pocket to keep her occupied, and an extra puppy pad or two (I’ve lined the car seat with a pad during potty training days, just in case of an accident on a long drive). If you’re going on a longer trip, bring her grooming supplies and any medications. It’s kind of like packing a diaper bag for a human baby . Think ahead about what your pup might need while away from home. I learned that lesson when I took a day trip and forgot her leash… now I have a backup leash that just lives in the car.

Stroller (Optional)

Some Yorkie owners get a pet stroller, which can be handy in crowded places or if your pup tires out on a long walk. These Yorkie supplies are not an absolute necessity, but it can be useful if you frequent outdoor events or malls where having your dog contained but with you is ideal. 

Given how tiny Yorkie puppies are, carrying them is easy enough, but a stroller can be a comfortable, protected spot for them.

Puppy teething (around 3 to 6 months of age) can be a challenging time. They have an urge to chew to relieve gum pain, and they might target your furniture or fingers if they don’t have appropriate chew toys. 

I quickly learned to always have a chew toy within arm’s reach to redirect my Yorkie when she started gnawing something she shouldn’t. One of her absolute favorites is the Carrot Rope Yorkie Toy.

Yorkshire Terriers are a long-lived breed, often reaching their teens. Generally, a Yorkie is considered “senior” by around 8 to 10 years old. Small breeds age more slowly – some vets don’t consider them seniors until about 11 years. As your Yorkie ages, you’ll notice subtle changes in their behavior and health. Here are some common signs of aging in senior Yorkies:

• More Sleep: Older Yorkies tend to sleep a lot more – sometimes 14-16 hours a day. Don’t be surprised if your senior pup prefers napping to nonstop play.
  
• Lower Energy & Activity: You might see them tire faster during walks or play. Senior dogs often have less stamina and may not be as interested in long games of fetch.
  
• Joint Stiffness: Arthritis and joint issues can crop up with age. Your Yorkie may struggle with stairs, jumping on furniture, or getting up after lying down.

In this post I’ll share what I’ve learned – both from vets and from my own experience with my little Yorkie – about the pros and cons of neutering a Yorkie. 

We’ll cover health effects, behavior changes, timing, and how to care for your pet after surgery (post-surgery care). 

Why Neuter Your Yorkie? (Benefits)

Neutering a Yorkie has several major benefits for health and behavior. For one, it prevents unwanted pregnancies and eliminates reproductive cancers. A neutered male Yorkie cannot father puppies and no longer faces testicular cancer. Besides, his risk of prostate disease is greatly reduced. In fact, studies note that neutering “eliminates the possibility of testicular tumors and reduces the risk of prostate disease” in dogs.

Neutering also tends to curb mating-related behaviors. For females, there are no more heat cycles (no bloody discharge or attraction of male dogs), which many owners find a relief. 

For male Yorkies, neutering often means less roaming and territory-marking. Male dogs can smell a female in heat miles away.  So, it’s not surprising that intact males often try to escape or mark. After neutering, these urges drop. 

By neutering your Yorkie, you’ll prevent urine-marking behavior and reduce their breeding instinct. Many owners say that their dogs became less obsessed with neighborhood bitches in heat once he was neutered. Their wanderlust and marking both declined noticeably.

Other advantages include overall lifespan and population benefits. Neutered dogs tend to live longer on average (since they avoid cancers and infections), and spaying/neutering helps prevent accidental litters and lowers pet overpopulation. (Millions of dogs are euthanized in shelters each year from unplanned litters.) 

Cons of Neutering a Yorkie (Risks and Downsides)

No medical procedure is entirely risk-free, and neutering a Yorkie has some potential downsides to consider. Major concerns include surgical/anesthesia risks, and a few health or behavior changes post-neuter:

Anesthetic/surgical risk

Any anesthesia has a small risk of complications or death. For dogs, the risk of death from general anesthesia is about 0.17%, or 1 in 600. Yorkies are small, so vets take extra care (e.g. warming blankets, blood pressure monitoring) to minimize risks. Still, there is always a chance of anesthesia reaction, hypotension, or hypothermia in tiny pups. In real life, serious problems are rare. However, I felt anxious before my puppy’s surgery. Good preparation and an experienced vet really help.

Urinary incontinence (females)

Spayed females can develop a “leaky bladder” later in life. Roughly 20% of spayed female dogs eventually show some incontinence (mostly when lying down). Waiting until your Yorkie is a little older (some say ~3 months old or more) can lower this risk. It’s a real downside to note: many owners end up needing doggy diapers or medication for leaks years after spay.

Possible increased certain cancers or bone issues

Some studies suggest that spayed/neutered dogs have slightly higher risks of certain cancers or orthopedic problems. For example, there is debate about neutering increasing risk of osteosarcoma (bone cancer), bladder cancer, or lymphoma. Removing sex hormones can delay the closure of growth plates. This means the dog might grow a little taller or have weaker joint cartilage. However, these effects are usually small and often found in larger breeds. Most research shows that small dogs, like Yorkies, do not have big increases in joint or cancer problems after neutering.

Weight gain

Metabolism can slow a bit after neutering. Many neutered dogs (Yorkies included) tend to gain weight if diet and exercise aren’t adjusted. So you’ll need to watch portions and activity to keep your Yorkie trim. Try not to overfeed your pooch with rewards and separate a certain amount of food for snacks. That’s how you’ll control calorie intake.

Behavioral change

While many sexual behaviors are reduced, neutering is not a cure-all for bad habits. A neutered Yorkie might still bark, have anxiety, or be energetic; it just won’t have the hormone-driven urges as much. In rare cases, a male or female might actually become slightly calmer or even more prone to anxiety post-neuter – every dog is different. But in general, the most predictable changes are reductions in mating behaviors (roaming, marking, mounting), not major personality shifts.

When to Neuter a Yorkie?

Timing matters. The traditional recommendation for toy breeds like Yorkies is to neuter or spay by around 6–9 months of age, but practices vary. It much depends on the dog’s weight, and appearance. In other words, if you own a teacup or miniature Yorkie, then your vet will recommend you to wait until your pooch matures a little bit. 

Generally, vets today suggest tailoring it to each dog:

• Males: For male Yorkies, testosterone-driven behaviors often kick in by 6–9 months. Neutering around that time usually works well to curb these behaviors. Some owners wait until their Yorkie has nearly finished growing (around 8–12 months), but small dogs typically don’t need a late-neuter like giant breeds do. The AKC notes that delaying neuter in large breeds can protect joints, but for small dogs (under ~45 lbs) early neutering didn’t show extra risks. In practice, neutering a Yorkie around 6–9 months is common.
  
• Health/Weight/Development: If your Yorkie was very small or sickly as a puppy, your vet might wait a bit longer (to ensure safe anesthesia). Conversely, if he’s very active in roaming or a female starts hormonally erratic behaviors early, you might spay/neuter earlier. Always base the decision on your dog’s growth, breed, and vet’s advice.

Do Yorkies Calm Down After Neutering?

A very common question! Neutering does often affect behavior – especially behaviors tied to hormones. Typically, younger dogs tend to “calm down” somewhat after spay/neuter if they were driven by mating urges. So if your male Yorkie was aggressively chasing female dogs or constantly marking territory, he’ll likely mellow a bit. My energetic terrier certainly stopped trying to bolt out the door during another dog’s heat after he was neutered.

However, neutering isn’t magic. If your Yorkie is naturally playful, barks a lot, or has separation anxiety, he will probably still act like that, just without the sexual drive. Many neutered dogs are still high-energy – they just might be a more “social” energy instead of “sexual” energy. In other words, neutering often stops specific reproductive behaviors, but doesn’t guarantee your Yorkie becomes a couch potato. Each dog is different. A small study noted small dogs don’t show large changes in temperament post-neuter. They usually just lose the urge to “find a mate.”

Yorkie Breeding and Pregnancy

If you plan to breed your Yorkie, then neutering/spaying is obviously off the table. Breeding Yorkies should be done carefully with health checks, pedigree knowledge, and ideally professional guidance – accidental litters are not advisable. For perspective, a pregnant Yorkie is no small affair: they carry the entire pregnancy for about 63 days, usually delivering 2–4 puppies (some litters can be 1 or as many as 5). If you do not want to breed your Yorkie, neutering is the best way to avoid an unplanned pregnancy. A female Yorkie can get pregnant at her first heat (as early as 6 months old), and even a tiny surge of sperm can lead to a litter. Similarly, an intact male Yorkie can impregnate any unspayed female it encounters. (In fact, male dogs can smell a female in heat from miles away.) So for most pet owners who aren’t professional breeders, preventing any mating – by spaying or neutering – keeps life simpler and less stressful.

Aftercare: Caring for Your Neutered Yorkie

After the surgery, your Yorkie will need tender loving care. The first 1–2 days are the most critical. Expect your pup to be groggy and disoriented from anesthesia – he may even vomit a little after coming home. According to vets, you should keep him rested and quiet for at least 24–48 hours. For the first night, limit food and water: offer only a quarter to half of his usual amount at dinner to prevent nausea, then monitor him closely overnight. (He should be somewhere you can watch him – no unattended yard time on day one.)

Rest and quiet:

Confine your Yorkie to a small area or crate when you can’t supervise him. This prevents him from jumping on furniture or chasing cats. Use a harness for bathroom breaks (avoid collars that pull on the neck). It’s often helpful to give him an extra-soft bed or cushion to lie on – Yorkies have tiny joints, and a supportive bed can help ease any soreness. After surgery, your Yorkie will need a soft, supportive place to sleep. A good dog bed – such as the padded Yorkie beds available at Yorkies-Gram – helps keep her comfortable and immobile. Yorkie-specific beds are made to support their little bodies and joints, reducing pressure and pain. I recommend putting the bed in a quiet corner where your pup can rest undisturbed for the next week or two.

Incision care:

Check the surgery site daily. Some bruising or slight swelling is normal, but keep an eye out for redness, oozing, or if your Yorkie yelps at the area. Do not apply any creams or sprays unless your vet instructs you to – these can irritate the incision. Keep the area clean and dry. Initially, there’s no need to bathe your pup. In fact, don’t bathe or swim him until the vet gives the all-clear (usually after stitches are out, ~10–14 days).

E-collar (cone):

It’s very important your Yorkie doesn’t lick or chew the stitches. Even a few licks can cause infection. Vets strongly recommend using an Elizabethan collar (E-collar) or recovery cone right after surgery. Keep the collar on 24/7 until the vet okays its removal – only take it off if you can watch your dog every second. There are even soft or inflatable collars available that can be more comfortable for Yorkies. Without it, your Yorkie’s natural grooming instinct could open the wound!

Exercise restriction:

Limit activity for about two weeks. Short leash walks to potty are fine, but no running, jumping, or rough play. Most vets recommend keeping the dog confined in a small room or crate except for bathroom breaks. This prevents the incision from tearing open. If your Yorkie is very small, it’s even helpful to carry her up and down stairs to avoid strain.

Diet and hydration:

Continue giving only a small meal the night of surgery (as above). The next day, you can resume a normal diet, but keep an eye on appetite and thirst. The vet may have sent home pain medication (often an NSAID) to keep your Yorkie comfortable. Make sure to give it exactly as directed; do not use human painkillers. After neutering, dogs often feel more relaxed and may gain weight faster, so measure food to maintain a healthy weight.

Signs of trouble:

Know when to call the vet. If you see extreme swelling, blood or green discharge, or your Yorkie is inconsolable, take action. A PetMD list notes any of these post-op issues need vet care: fever, difficulty urinating, uncontrolled pain, vomiting/diarrhea, or if the incision opens.

Bathing/grooming:

No baths until the vet says it’s safe (usually after stitches are removed). The incision needs to stay dry. When you do bathe your Yorkie again (typically 10–14 days later), use a gentle shampoo. I highly recommend a Yorkie-specific formula like the 2-in-1 PH-balanced shampoo/conditioner. It’s designed for sensitive Yorkie skin, cleans without irritation, and will leave her coat soft. Keep clipping her nails short, but wait on full grooming until cleared.

Final Thoughts

Deciding to spay or neuter your Yorkie involves weighing the long-term health and behavior benefits against the short-term surgery risks. Most pet parents find that the benefits – like preventing disease, unwanted litters, and reducing mating behaviors – are worth it. In my case, neutering my Yorkie led to a happier home (no more frantic mating chases!) and peace of mind about his health. That said, it’s normal to feel nervous about the surgery. Choose a vet you trust, and follow their guidance on timing.

Remember to incorporate loving care after the procedure. Preventing pregnancy also means avoiding the stress and cost of difficult births or emergency C‑sections. As Yorkies come in miniature and teacup sizes as well, spaying can save them from painful puppy delivery and complications with uterus.
    
  • Health Benefits: A spayed Yorkie has a much lower risk of mammary (breast) cancer. She also won’t get ovarian or uterine tumors, and the procedure entirely prevents pyometra (a life-threatening infection of the uterus).
    
  • Eliminates Heat Cycles: Your Yorkie won’t experience seasons. Spaying stops the 7–10 day bloody discharge of heat. It also avoids false pregnancies (which can cause behavioural and physical problems). During false pregnancies, dogs act like they’re really pregnant and even their bellies start to grow. Yes, you read it right! This condition really exists and it’s related to the dog’s psyche. No more puppy pads or worrying about a male dog taking interest!
    
  • Behavior in Season: Because there are no hormone-driven seasons, your Yorkie may be calmer around that time of month (some owners note less irritability once she’s spayed).
    
• Cons:
  
  • Surgical Risks: Any surgery and general anaesthetic carry a small risk. Modern vet care is very safe. A large study in the UK found that only about 1 in 10,000 neuter or spay procedures led to death from anesthesia. Tiny teacup Yorkies do need extra caution (a skilled vet, precise dosing, warming pads, etc.), but overall the risk is very low.
    
  • Weight Gain: Spayed dogs can be more prone to weight gain. Yorkies have high metabolisms, but you should still watch her food intake and keep her active after spaying. Adjusting her diet or using “light” dog food often solves this.
    
  • No Guaranteed Calm: It’s a myth that spaying automatically makes a dog mellow. In reality, a Yorkie’s personality usually stays the same. If she was energetic or anxious before, she’ll likely still need training and exercise afterwards. Spaying won’t magically fix obedience issues.
    
  • Possible Incontinence: A small percentage of spayed females (estimates around 20%) can develop a weak bladder later in life. Incontinence (leaking urine) is uncommon, but it’s something to discuss with your vet. Many vets say the benefits outweigh this risk, especially if spaying is done at the right age.
